Super Amazing Wagon Adventure (XBLIG, 2012)

Released for Xbox Live Indie Games (7/2012)
Also on PC (10/2013)

An easy way to describe Super Amazing Wagon Adventure is the old computer classic the Oregon Trail on steroids! The graphics are presented with old-school chunky pixels, complete with a filter that warps the sides a bit to make it look as though you're playing on a CRT monitor. I know the visuals may not look so hot from the screenshots but once you play the game it looks much better in action. The music and sound effects are a bit more modern than the graphics, but they complement the game nicely. I definitely love the muffled digitized voices that pop up from time to time.

At the main menu you can select from adventure, survival, shuffle, help/options, credits and quit game. Adventure mode will follow a story as you travel across various landscapes, survival has a bunch of scenarios you can play once you unlock them in adventure, and shuffle becomes an option once you complete adventure mode. Under the options menu you have the ability to customize the controls, graphics, adjust the music volume, select the text speed and turn vibration on or off. Graphics options are a CRT effect, motion blur and lens flare.

At the start of adventure you are given a crew of three, which you can randomly select or customize them by changing their names and selecting from a bunch of faces. There are also a ton of different "wagons" to choose from but to start off you'll only have access to your basic covered wagon. Adventure mode has a fast pace to it and changes up the events quite frequently. One thing you'll notice pretty quick about Super Amazing Wagon Adventure is that it's pretty crazy. Just within the first few screens of the game I followed a unicorn into a magical field, only to be ambushed by a stampede of angry unicorns. Later on as I was trying to ford my way across a river I was attacked by a pirate ship!

The random craziness you come across keeps adventure mode interesting, and you'll unlock survival mode scenarios and new wagons as you progress. One screen might have you blasting at bandits from your wagon, played out similar to a horizontal shoot 'em up while on the next screen you'll be on foot shooting oncoming bears with a twin-stick shooter control layout. Each little segment the game throws at you will be on of these two varieties and the game will switch them up on you frequently and often. Death can come quick in Super Amazing Wagon Adventure, but there are health pickups and weapon power-ups you can find on your adventure to give you a nice boost. Overall a this game is good fun and recommended for all, but particularly for fans of retro games.

Originally released for XBLIG in 2012, Super Amazing Wagon Adventure would see a release for PC a little over a year later. It's definitely a good thing this game wasn't lost with the closure of XBLIG!

Final Verdict: For the price of $1, I find it hard to not recommend Super Amazing Wagon Adventure. The game is fun, controls well and has solid replay value.
