Space Crüesader (XBLIG, 2012)

Space Crüesader
Developed by Unfinity Games
Released for Xbox Live Indie Games (11/2012)

Space Crüesader is yet another twin-stick shooter released exclusively on the XBLIG market. This one is a variant on the arcade classic Asteroids, but unlike that game there will be enemies present that will fire at you but your primary concern are dodging/destroying the onslaught of asteroids flying around all over the place. Just like in Asteroids, when you fire at the rocks they blow up into smaller chunks. There are also stranded ships floating about, and you can extract the survivors by hovering over the ships. It's nice to have an objective other than just shoot everything sometimes and it helps give the action some variety. In addition to the single-player arcade style mode, there is also a 2-player survival mode which I never had the opportunity to test out. The game also keeps track of your high scores, which is always a necessity for these score-based types of games but is not always delivered. The soundtrack is nice and the sound design does the action justice. Graphically everything is well drawn and the sprites rotate nicely, however it can be easy to lose track of the smaller projectiles amidst all the chaos sometimes. Overall the graphics design is definitely above average. I've only played the first few levels of the trial for Space Crüesader so far, but this is one has a good level of polish to it and is a game I would have considered purchasing the full version had the XBLIG store not shut down.

Final Verdict: Twin-stick shooter junkies will get some mileage from Space Crüesader! Also recommended for fans of the Atari classic Asteroids!
