Bleed
Developed by BootdiskRevolution
Released for XBLIG (12/2012)
Also on PC/Mac/Linux/PS4/Xbox One
Bleed is an XBLIG title developed by BootdiskRevolution and released in 2012. The game is a 2D run 'n gunner presented with pixel artwork. I'm sure you've noticed that this trend has been a bit overused, especially with indie titles, but Bleed really uses the format properly and the sprites have a lot of personality to them. The music and sound effects sound like something you would have heard on an old 16-bit machine and complement the artwork making the retro presentation feel complete.
Bleed controls a bit different than your standard run 'n gun title, with the left stick used to move and the right stick to aim and fire. Right trigger is your jump and the left trigger uses your bullet time (which is of course limited). The controls work extremely well and you feel in proper control of your character once you remember to use your bullet time in appropriate spots. Your character sports a triple jump and can hop off walls so she is very agile. The level designs seem well designed and based around using your abilities. Also worth noting is that the game supports local co-op!
Bleed would later see ports to PC, Mac and Linux. In August 2017 the game would see a port to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, so expect my review of the full game whenever I get around to buying it for the One. A sequel was released for PC in February of 2017 and saw a release for the Xbox One the following year. I've only played the trial for the game thus far and even just off that I find it easy to recommend. Bleed looks to be a very solid action title in a genre that doesn't get a whole lot of attention anymore.
Final Verdict: Bleed will definitely appeal to fans of the old Contra and Metal Slug games with its 2D run 'n gun action. It's been released on a wide variety of platforms so give it a go on the system of your choice!
