Pill Mania HD (Xbox One, 2018)

Pill Mania HD
Developed by Sprakelsoft
Released for Xbox One (3/2018)
Also on iOS

Pill Mania HD is a port of a mobile game released way back in 2013, and to be quite frank that's exactly what it feels like. The game comes from Sprakelsoft, the same folks who brought us the underwhelming Croc's World. The game is a blatant Dr. Mario rip-off, to the point Nintendo might be able to take legal action should they choose to do so. Just being a rip-off alone doesn't make a game bad, but unfortunately Pill Mania HD just doesn't measure up to the game it mimics.

Pill Mania HD doesn't seem to have received much of a facelift from the mobile original for this Xbox One port, looking like something that came out for your phone years ago. The menus are bare bones and the game graphics, while looking similar to Dr. Mario, display a lack of creativity. The sound design is almost nonexistent as the game features very few sound effects and some very bland music.

The premise is exactly the same as Dr. Mario: match up pills to the coordinating colors on the critters to clear them out. The game does not include a two-player head-to-head mode, which was always one of the best things about Dr. Mario. If you're going to rip-off a game, try to include the features that made that game worth cloning! In the end Pill Mania HD is an uninspired rip-off of a puzzle classic that should have stayed on the mobile store. The trial mode for the game will only allow you to clear two stages before requesting for you to pay to unlock the full game. No thanks!

Final Verdict: Pill Mania HD is a Dr. Mario clone that's nowhere near as good as the game it imitates. It's a lazy port of a lame mobile game that should have never wound up on a console.
