Crosstown (XBLIG, 2009)

Crosstown
Developed by Studio Hunty
Released for XBLIG (10/2009)

Crosstown is based on an old Commodore game called Crossroads, which I've never played due to the fact I've never owned or even seen a Commodore system. Crosstown is a single-screen maze game similar to the many arcade titles of the '80's. You play as a little guy armed with a gun who can blast through walls. Your goal is to collect all the "qreds," little ring-shaped objects scattered about the playing field. As you progress the game will introduce several types of enemies with different behaviors. Enemies will respawn infinitely until you've collected all the qreds. Enemies in later levels can get pretty tricky, some of them will eat through walls and others will eat the qreds you're trying to collect. Once the enemies are blasted the eaten qred will respawn on the playfield.

Crosstown features 40 levels in the arcade mode. There's a nice feature in the game that allows you to skip any levels you've cleared without dying on previous runs. Also selectable at the main menu is endless mode, which allows you to play forever if you'd like. The game also supports up to four players. Upon loading the game, you're greeted with an awesome FMV intro where you see the game inserted into the computer and booted up. Crosstown originally retailed for $4.99, but has since been reduced to $1. I recommend this game to those who love the old single-screen maze games of decades past. The developers have an interesting history with a varied backlog of titles, many for iOS and Android but going back as far as the Game Boy Color! Check out their site in the links below.

Final Verdict: Crosstown is an excellent tribute the single-screen maze titles that dominated back in the early '80's. Plus it's only a buck!
