Released as a demo for Life is Strange 2, the Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit released in late June 2018. The game follows a 9-year-old boy, who has a crazy imagination and escapes to a fantasy version of reality where he becomes his superhero alter ego: Captain Spirit. Since this is classified as a free demo, there are no achievements or gamerscore to unlock, which unfortunately many will skip over this one. Let's take a look and see if the Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is worth the download...
A playthrough of the Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is only going to eat up an hour or two of your time, so there's not much to lose going into this. The game puts you in the shoes of Chris, a young boy with a hyperactive imagination, who creates a superhero alter ego by the name of Captain Spirit. Chris is an only-child that lives with his father and they are both struggling in the aftermath of losing Chris's mother in a tragic hit-and-run accident. Chris's father has turned to alcohol to cope with his loss and during the course of the game he drinks himself to sleep while watching a sports game. Captain Spirit basically entails the adventures of Chris while he does some chores around the place, using his vivid imagination to make these mundane tasks seem exciting.
It's not all just doing chores in Captain Spirit, because with Chris being a kid there's always time to play. There are toys lying around you can play with and you can assemble your superhero outfit using items found around the house. The game gives you a list of tasks that can be accomplished and it's up to you to explore around the house and the backyard to find them. Gameplay consists of walking around and interacting with various objects, with the occasional dialogue prompt when speaking with another person. It's simple, works well and if you're unsure where to go you likely just need to continue exploring and interacting with everything.
The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit runs on the Unreal Engine 4, which is a nice upgrade from the previous titles in the series which utilized the older Unreal Engine 3. The characters, environments and lighting have all seen a noticeable improvement for this entry. Another thing that stands out is the framerate, which runs at a mostly-steady 60 FPS where all of the other entries in the the Life is Strange series (including the sequel which came out after this) run at 30 FPS.
The final episode for the previous game, Life is Strange: Before the Storm, released in March 2018, with Captain Spirit hitting the store a few months later in June. Before the Storm was handled by Deck Nine Games, but Captain Spirit had the series return to the team who developed the original game, DONTNOD Entertainment. While Before the Storm was a good effort, most fans tend to agree that it didn't quite live up to the original, so it was exciting to see DONTNOD back at the helm.
The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is worth a look if you enjoyed the previous Life is Strange titles and made for a fun preface to Life is Strange 2. It's by no means essential to the story of the sequel, but it does get you the opportunity to become more acquainted with Chris, who serves a minor role in Life is Strange 2. While it's short and offers no achievements, if you've enjoyed any of the other titles in the Life is Strange series you should definitely give the Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit a look.
Final Verdict: The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is follows a day in the life of a young boy named Chris, who loves to use his imagination and pretend that he's a superhero. While it only lasts an hour or two, it's worth a play if you enjoyed the previous Life is Strange titles or just want a nice point & click adventure style game.
