PREFACE
While there were a few SNK titles released during the Xbox 360 era, I was always disappointed that SNK decided to release Samurai Showdown II on the Xbox Live Arcade while skipping the original game. Fast-forward to the next console generation and thanks to Hamster and the Arcade Classics Archive series, the original Samurai Showdown has now seen a release on just about everything out there.
PRESENTATION/GRAPHICS
Samurai Showdown is simply a gorgeous game to look at if you appreciate sprite artwork. You'll be hard-pressed to find another game released in 1993 that can stand up to the giant sprites contained here. The backgrounds are colorful, detailed and contain enough animation to feel lively. The character sprites look incredible and the huge characters Tam Tam and Earthquake really stand out as some of the biggest animated sprites ever seen in a video game at this point. The camera zooms out as characters space apart and this effect still looks impressive even all these years later. The only gripe I can find in regard to the graphics would be the lack of parallax scrolling, but this is obviously due to the camera zoom effects and in the heat of battle you'll hardly have time to notice. Also worth a mention is the superb sound and music design. The music sounds authentic to the samurai theme and the sounds of swords clanging and cutting sound very convincing. Samurai Showdown excels in the presentation department and was one of the games that helped demonstrate that SNK was going to be a serious player in the arcade fighting scene in the years to come.

Samurai Shodown is one of the key releases when it came to solidifying the Neo-Geo as a force to be reckoned with in the arcades back in the early 90's. The large sprites looked like something next-gen when compared to much of what we'd seen before
