Rofaxan 2089 AD is a shmup released on the indie games marketplace in 2013. It aims to emulate the look of the 16-bit shooters of the '90's, particularly the Turbografx-16 from NEC (or the PC Engine in Japan). The game does use a lower resolution in effort to look the part, but the color palette and graphic tricks are obviously beyond what the old system could handle, more like something from the 32-bit era. The game also features a rock soundtrack, not unlike something you might have found in Lords of Thunder or any other numerous Turbografx CD shooters from back in the day. Overall I'd say the game pretty much succeeds at what it aims to do graphically and the gameplay is simplistic like something from back in the day, but honestly there just wasn't enough here to draw me in. The game has some pretty unimaginative stage and enemy designs, so combined with the super simple gameplay I found myself getting bored with this one rather quickly. You basically just have one mode of fire and while there are pickups to change your fire mode and enhance your shots nothing alters the fact that you just have one button to shoot with which is about as engaging as it sounds. Shmups have evolved quite a bit since the '90's, and a throwback shooter can be a great experience, but I didn't find Rofaxan 2089 AD to really do the titles that inspired it the justice they deserve.

Final Verdict: If you are a hardcore Turbografx shmup fan then you might enjoy this Rofaxan 2089 AD, however there are many better shooters available on the 360.
