Soulcaster (XBLIG, 2010)

Soulcaster
Developed by MagicalTimeBean
Released for XBLIG (3/2010)
Also on Linux/Mac/PC

Soulcaster is a 2D action-strategy game with pixel graphics. The game bears some resemblance to the arcade classic Gauntlet with its top-down view, but unlike that game you have no direct method of attack in Soulcaster. Instead, you play as a soulcaster, who has the ability to summon warriors to do his fighting for him. You'll find three different types of allies you can spawn, an archer, a warrior and a third who throws fire bombs at foes. They each have their own strengths and weaknesses, the archer has low HP but can hit enemies from afar, the warrior can take a beating but his attack strength is moderate and the fire bomb guy can hit enemies over walls but explodes when killed and damages nearby allies. This formula works great and it's up to the player to figure out the best combination for the job. The amount of allies you can place on the battlefield at once is limited to how many "soul orbs" you possess. Early on you'll acquire three of them, but additional orbs can be purchased from the shop later on in the game, in addition to the ability to upgrade your allies. When you spawn an ally, they'll remain in place at the spot you've placed them until they are either defeated or you recall them with a press of the Y button. It's a cool system that you'll grow familiar with quickly. The levels are competently designed to offer up opportunities for you to utilize each of your allies and the game is a blast to play. Soulcaster is a fun, unique game that was an excellent addition to any XBLIG library. Unlike many other indie titles released on XBLIG, Soulcaster received ports to Linux, Macintosh and PC so the game is still easily playable today. The game would also receive a sequel on XBLIG later in 2010 which, like the first game, received ports for Linux, Macintosh and PC.

Final Verdict: Soulcaster has a nice retro aesthetic but packs quite a bit of originality, making for a fun and fresh experience. Highly recommended!
