Solar (XBLIG, 2009)

Solar
Developed by Murudai
Released for XBLIG (3/2009)

The original Solar was released as an XBLIG exclusive in 2009. In the game you are the sun, able to explore a universe laid out for you. In sandbox mode you're free to do as you please, whether it's being a space bully by destroying other suns and taking their planets into your orbit or you can take an asteroid into your orbit and nurture it into a living planet. Solar is an incredibly unique idea and though the title is simple in presentation and controls it manages to execute this ambitious concept rather well. There tons of little details that add to the experience, like little fighter ships that can spawn from living planets (either hostile or friendly depending on the planet's condition). In addition to sandbox mode, Solar also has a bunch of challenges if the player prefers having an objective to accomplish. As challenges are completed you can unlock new options for the game, adding a little extra replay value potential. Solar is unlike any space game I've ever played and you really can't go wrong with the price tag of $1.

Final Verdict: Solar is an incredibly ambitious title where you play as the sun flying around in space. If you're looking for something a bit different then you've found it.
