AtomHex
Developed by Escapist Games
Released for XBLIG (8/2009)
AtomHex is a twin-stick shooter with color-coordination gimmick. You'll have to collect the appropriate color hexagon to change your shot color to coordinate with the enemies you're trying to kill. Some enemies can be killed by any color shot, but certain enemies with shields can only be destroyed by gunfire of the same color. Big points can be earned from chaining together multiple kills of the same color. You'll be able to pick up power-ups such as enhanced firepower, multipliers and one that freezes all enemies. The game also features its own built in awards system which functions very similarly to achievements, with 100 different challenges to unlock. If you like some intricate scoring mechanics in your shooters, then you may enjoy this title. Personally, I think the title is well-designed but I just wasn't attracted to the color-matching mechanic and found it a bit too complex for this style of game, but I'm sure there are some shooter fans out there who might dig it.
Final Verdict: AtomHex is a twin-stick shooter featuring complex scoring tactics involving color chaining and multipliers. Definitely not for everybody but if you like complicated mechanics in your twin-stick shooter you might like it.
