Aesop's Garden (XBLIG, 2009)

Aesop's Garden
Developed by Excalibur Studios
Released for XBLIG (11/2009)

Aesop's Garden is a 2D puzzle game that will seem instantly familiar to fans of the classic Adventures of Lolo game series from the NES. The graphics, sound and music are presented in 8-bit style and it feels pretty authentic. The game differs a bit from the Lolo titles in that the items you need to collect in order to advance are not immediately visible. Instead, first you'll have to make your way to a sprinkler, activate it and then the weeds will grow. You'll have a set amount you'll have to collect before you can advance. There are blocks scattered about, usually placed to block your access to the weeds and sprinkler. Even just playing the trial version I ran into a real head-scratcher early on, so if you like a nice challenge in your puzzler Aesop's Garden ought to provide what you need. If you mess up a puzzle and render it unfinishable, you can simply hit the back button to reset the stage. The game will eventually introduce enemies into the mix and you'll even have to face off against boss battles later on. The controls are a tad loose and take some getting used to, but the game is well designed overall and has some very well thought out puzzles. It is priced higher than most XBLIG at $2.99, but the game does have a good level of polish and should easily satisfy puzzle fans.

Final Verdict: Aesop's Garden is a 2D puzzle game that will especially appeal to fans of the Adventures of Lolo series and general puzzle fans alike.
